Angus MacLise (1938-1979) was a major figure in the
New York City music scene during his brief life. A
poet and percussionist, MacLise developed a free form
of musical rhythm in the early 1960s which strongly
influenced later developments in music, particularly
The Velvet Underground, with which MacLise originally
played as a drummer. Overlooked until recently,
MacLise's ouvre has been revived with the debut of an
album Invasion of the Thunderbolt Pagoda, an important
collection of previously unreleased works which takes
its title from an avante-garde film by Ira Cohen for
which MacLise created the soundtrack.
